 Shirley Mae Run & Walk

The
Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund is a local non-profit in
the business of helping people with breast cancer, right here in our
community, with the cost of medication, prosthesis needs, wigs, and
other related items—including a monthly breast cancer support group
and educational program at Gilda’s Club South Jersey.
The
energy and fun of the Shirley Mae Walk and Run, its major annual
fundraiser, is just around the corner: Saturday, May 7 on the
Atlantic City Boardwalk in front of the Taj Mahal. This year
there is a new and improved 1.5 mile boardwalk walk, Kids’ 1 Mile Run
and the 5K and 10K (new!) run are with D-Tag RFID timing.
Register
on-line at www.shirleymaefund.org by Monday, April 25 and save $5 per runner and
walker. After the 25th and same day registration will be $35
for runners, $25 for walkers, $20 for students and $15 for children
under 12.
The
festivities begin at 7:30 AM with a continental breakfast on the
banquet hall level of the casino for breast cancer survivors and one
guest, compliments of the Taj Mahal. Meanwhile, on the
boardwalk, Broken Strings, the excellent local rock and roll band
that has donated their talent in the past at the Hope Music Fest,
will be providing the sound track for the gathering crowd.
The awe
inspiring Survivor’s Parade, complete with St. Augustine Prep
escorts, and Opening Ceremony kicks-off at 8:30 AM. The race,
walk and Kid’s 1 Mile run all begin at 9:10. Because of the new
timing system, results and awards will start rolling at 10 AM for the
5K and 10:45 AM for the 10K. Awards will go to winners by age group,
top fundraisers, big teams, sponsor teams and survivors. By the
end of the morning, it will feel like everyone is a winner. Not
to worry, there will be plenty of people on the boards to cheer you
on should you cross the finish a little later.
In
addition to supporting Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund,
proceeds will also benefit Gilda’s Club South Jersey and the
Jefferson Pancreatic and Related Cancers Surgical Research and
Education Fund.

Donaghy, the Garden Goddess by the Sea, will show us how to grow
pretty things & yummy things in pots, in small spaces, in bigger
spaces... Gardening has been shown to lower stress & increase
positive thinking! Held at the

for Surgery, Heal Faster
Thursday, April 21 at pm
This
workshop, led by Adria Light, RN, Program Manager, was developed by
Peggy Huddleston to help people go through surgery with less fear
& anxiety, experience fewer complications and heal faster with
less pain. Learn a guided deep relaxation/visualization to
listen to every day. This technique can be helpful with
procedures & tests, as well as surgery. Experience
decreased anxiety & pain, fewer complications & heal
faster! Held at the Gilda’s Club Clubhouse in Linwood.

A new, monthly, facilitated group for men touched by
cancer in any way. Whether you are a patient or survivor, a
family member or friend, or have lost a loved one, come be with other
guys for support & camaraderie. Held at the Gilda’s Club Living Room at AtlantiCare
Cancer Care Institute.

- Divas In A Man's World
Wednesday, May 4 at 7pm
The
world's best celebrity and female impersonator show, Believe - Divas in a
Man's World, is opening at Resorts Casino in
May. But before it opens to the public, they're performing a
pre-show just for Gilda's Club South Jersey on May 4! 100% of
the $50 ticket price will go directly to GCSJ. The tickets
are general admission and include a gourmet coffee and dessert
reception following the show.

living with Ovarian Cancer?
If so, the Cancer Support Community needs your help!
We are
pleased to announce the launch of an ovarian cancer survey that aims
to assess the psychosocial needs of women living with ovarian cancer.
Survey questions center around issues of body image, employment,
fertility and relationships. We would like to better understand
women’s concerns in order to develop educational programming that
