Ellen & Katie Muller

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2006, I was very grateful I could turn to Gilda's Club for the support I needed.  It was here I could talk to other survivors and people going through the same things I was going through.  It made the process of chemo, losing my hair, etc. all that much more bearable when I knew at some point I would come out on the other side of it.  The only thing that bothered me, though, and what I kept sharing with the program director and other counselors there, was that there wasn't enough support for small children of cancer patients.  My daughter was three when I was diagnosed, and though my husband and I were always positive with her in our honest sharing of how I was doing, she still worried about me and my health (especially when chemo left me bald).   Small children need a special way of handling a cancer diagnosis and anything else that goes with it.   I was so happy when I was told that they were starting Noogieland in the spring of 2007.

Noogieland is an excellent program that provides young children with a way of expressing how they feel about cancer in a safe environment with other children who know exactly how they feel because they are going through it, too.  Even though I am now cancer-free, my daughter, Katie is hard-pressed to miss a week of Noogieland.   The activities at Noogieland, not my reassurances, are what have convinced her that cancer is not going to kill me - something that had been a fear of hers for a long time.
