Susan & George George and Susan have been married
for 50 plus years. They raised four children together in Chester
County, PA. George worked for 35 years in the circulation and marketing
department of TV Guide. Susan was a buyer for a lumber co-op called LMC
in Wayne, PA. They were
living their dream: retired with a place in Ocean City, NJ and another in Key
West, FL. The kids were grown and on their way. Life was
good. Susan was a ball of fire. No hint of anything. But
within two weeks of her lung suddenly collapsing early in 2006, she had a
diagnosis of small cell lung cancer and was beginning her chemotherapy and
radiation treatment in Key West. George said
that they attended a support group in Key West. When they came up north
the following summer they happened to meet Petie Subin, a facilitator at
GCSJ, walking her new puppy on the Ventnor boardwalk. Petie suggested
they come to a new member meeting. When asked
“why support?” George replied, “I think it is a matter of do you want
to go through this alone or do you want to share it? We have gotten great
information at the Club. You can go on the internet or you can go to
Gilda’s. The information is much better at Gilda’s.” Susan said that she had two reasons
for attending Gilda’s Club. “The first reason is for my husband because
he enjoys the support he gets from his group. The second is because I
needed support when I was first diagnosed. Gilda’s Club has helped.” To read other member's stories, click here. Buy a Boardwalk Plank! Buying a boardwalk
